Why did you stay (or currently staying) in your horrible relationship for so long?

I was in a controlling relationship for three years. It didn't start out to be like that. He was kind and gentle and understanding at first then it started to turn into an emotionally abusive relationship. He broke me down and made me believe that he was the best thing that would ever happen to me and if I left I wouldn't find anyone else. It got to the point to where I knew what topics to bring up and what not to. There were more nights than not that I would stay up all night crying because of things he said to me and I thought that was normal. I knew relationships took a lot of work for them to last so I just thought that that was what I was doing. Almost three years later, I met new people and let them know about my relationship and it took for them pointing out signs and things for me to see how bad the relationship actually was. I thought I deserved what I was going through and that everything was normal. It was hard to leave.. its been almost six months since I've cut him out of my life and everyday I still want to go back to him. I still want to unblock him and talk to him but I can't. I promised my best friend that I would stay out of that relationship and work on me. Work on getting the body I want. Work on getting passed my mental place.

My ex was emotionally unavailable and quite possibly a sociopath.  I thought I stayed because I loved him.  I now know that I stayed because I had put so much effort into getting him, that I didn't want to fail by losing him.  I also have this strange obsession with being able to love people unconditionally.  I now know everyone doesn't deserve that from me.  I'lI leave that up to God.

I was in one for almost 4 yrs with my childhood best friend. She manipulated me into paying for everything (I looked more masculine than her), and when I had problems she always made it is seem like hers were more important than mine. looking back and having close friends and family tell me that for the 3 1/2 yrs we were together I never seemed happy. I stayed for so long because I spent most of my life trying to make her happy as friends and it seemed like I could when we were together. Also I didn't want to loose her from my life. But I ended up breaking up with her cause I wasnt happy with her anymore and I was done being put down in my life. now I miss talking to her but I don't regreat my decision

Currently in an emotionally/mentally abusive relationship... I'm in college and have 3 kids under the age of 4 plus no help from family or friends. So I'm stuck until I graduate in March and find a job 😔 There's no working it out and I've become completely unconnected these past few months so now I'm just counting down the days. Already making plans and looking for places to move .if money wasn't an issue then I would already be gone 💔
