The Pill effectiveness?

I just got the pill, and I have been on it before but never trusted it as birth control on its own, because I can't figure out how it's effective when I don't take them for a week or there's no hormones in them for a week. is it less effective during the first week of a pack and if I were to have sex during my period would it be totally ineffective??

Please read your pill insert for the lost accurate information but typically with a combo pill is effective after taking it as directed for 7 days. I find that most people don't trust the pill the first month though so if you want to be sure maybe wait until your second withdrawal bleed.
