At what point did you (or should you) start going to a gyno?

I admit, I don't see a gyno. My mom never talked to me about that or encouraged me to see one, so I always thought it was just a thing you did when you got pregnant, noticed a problem, or were trying to conceive. Recently, I have noticed a lot of ladies my age (21) see a gynaecologist  regularly! 
When did you first start seeing a gyno?

When I was 18 or 19 I called to make an appointment to see a gynecologist and they told me that I didn’t need to come in until 21 even though I was sexually active. Then after my Pap smear they told me to come in every 3 years unless they find something unusual 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m due for my Pap smear in a few months and when I tried to go in a few months ago they said insurance won’t cover it unless it’s necessary .

I think a general rule is when you become sexually active or around age 21. I went the first time at 22; it's an important part of looking out for your health as you get older. It's better to be safe than discover things later

I had a ruptured ovarian cyst requiring emergency surgery when I was 13 and then diagnosed with PCOS so have been under a gyno since then. Without problems like that though I would say anywhere between 17 and 22 for just smear tests depending on whether you are sexually active or not.
In the UK unless you go private or have a diagnosed condition you don’t just go to a specialist like a gyno, you go to your NHS GP and they send you through for a referral with a specialist consultant if they either diagnose something needing a specialist or they can’t find the problem so send you to them for further investigation.

I've never seen a gyno but I'm not even sure if they have them here? But I first went to the nurse for a smear test when I got the letter in the post. I may have been about 21? I haven't been since though apart from sorting out birth control. But I've still only slept with my boyfriend. If I was single and sleeping with more people then I would get tested more.

I think it's important to go once you are 17-18, regardless of sexual activity. The main reason is for the Pap smear which screens for cancer. Though it's rare for women as young as that to develop cervical cancer, it's still good practice to be checked once a year.
