Is this rape?

When I was pregnant my abusive ex would demand sex from me at times. Once he even held me down while I was crying to have sex with me. He later said that he didn't care that I was crying and that it was my fault for withholding sex from him. After I had our child he also immediately started making me having with him even though I told him we had to wait at least 6 weeks. I had to go to the E.R because he caused my stitches to come out. I was telling this to my friend and she said that it wasn't "real" rape because we were in a relationship so I couldn't press criminal charges or anything. Is this true?
