Would you be a school cafeteria worker?

I'm torn between staying in school to be a Medical assistant and making 15-17 an hour. Or I can stop school and be a cafeteria worker and start off at $17 and hour with paid weekend, holidays, and summers. And I'd be off weekend, holidays and summer. And you get benefits and a 401k. Please help.

So if you’re going to the cafeteria, how much money do you need to spend getting there and back? How much money do you need to spend for clothes and food for example? And how much will you be making after you subtract all of this? Is it still worthwhile? Then go for it! I bring this up because a penny saved is a penny earned.

Medical assistant will give you more opportunities in the future... think about how far you can go in the cafeteria? and also.... kids... and their germs... so many germs... ugh

Well.... which one do you have a passion for? Not a lot of people are super passionate about cafeteria work. I worked in a school, the cafeteria lady was mean and nasty and my husbands boss (I personally hate meal prep) because she wasn’t happy. But the other guys I talked to there we’re loving it because it was their peanut butter and jelly.
Don’t go chasing money. Trust me, I was making a lot of money. Ended up quitting after 3 months because I didn’t have a passion for it. Now I’m interviewing for a job tomorrow for interpreting. Yay!
I didn’t vote, only because I can’t tell you what you want to do in your life. Passion makes you happy in your work.

Working as a medical assistant would really depend on where you ended up working. Working at a clinic, you would probably end up working 8 to 5, Monday through Friday. So that would at least give you weekends off. And if that clinic was a private practice, you could potentially get some holidays off as well. Many of those jobs offer pretty good benefits and that might include a 401k. Also, as a cafeteria worker, you would have the summer off. But you have to think that that is 2-3 months without any pay what so ever. Which would leave you needing to either find a temporary job, or needing to save throughout the year to have enough money at that time to ensure you don’t need a job during that time. It’s certainly possible to do, and perhaps even easy too. But it’s just something to think about. Trying to give you a little weight on each side of the balancing scale. :)

I know someone who worked in a school cafeteria. I think she really liked the job but eventually (after 10 plus yrs working there, and moving up to running the kitchen) the politics of all the different ppl she worked with drove her out. though I suppose you could have that anywhere. she's got so much dirt on all her coworkers. the lady in charge of the budget cooked the books, married ppl cheating on their spouses with coworkers, kids parents giving her shit over petty problems (meth head insisted his kid was allergic to milk just so he didn't have to drink white milk at breakfast but wouldn't fill out the proper paperwork and said the kid could still have ice cream), kid threw a microwave across the cafeteria and was banging his head against the brick wall hardcore.....just figured you might wanna know that a school cafeteria can be as entertaining/stressful/exciting as a hospital. even in a tiny Podunk country town lol.
