How to build credit?

Question

Okay so I’m not close to my family members and don’t feel comfortable asking them this (I’m the middle child aka black sheep of fam but anyways) how DO you build credit? And what are good scores, etc lol I’m 19 and I’m trying to also be independent and do things on my own...

I took out a loan for my braces and have paid that every month on time with automatic withdrawal for almost 2 years, 2 payments left. I use the envelope system so budget which has helped me save $7,000. I also have a credit card that I only for food and gas. I get paid 2x a month split my bills in half every check and the remander gets put 50/50 savings account and monthly spending on misc wants.

By doing this Im 25 with two things on my credit history, my braces loan and my credit card. My file finally became large enough to generate a score as of March and it's already up to 730.

Credit is basically a score that tells you how well you are able to pay back money. Think of credit as money someone has loaned you. Good credit is a high score. Lower your score, the worse your credit is. Try and stay around 700-800. That's in the green.  
It takes a long time to build credit though. You get dinged if you don't use it so be wary of that. Most places won't give you more than $500 to start with on a credit card since you have no credit. To start, use it to pay for gas, food, toiletries etc. At the end of the month, pay it all off with your income. That will get you used to paying it off. 
Now to really build credit you need to make big purchases. That will get you into actually building real credit points. Cars, houses, personal loans, student loans, etc. Make sure you make these at all times. They will really bring up your points. The more you're able to pay off all your debts, the more money you get on your credit line to use.

A lot of good advice given already, just sharing my experience. I got my first credit card at 18, and still have that account open, which is good for credit score- you want to show a long credit history, so don’t close your oldest accounts.  
-Get a credit card and pay in full each month. No missed payments!! Extremely important. You also don’t want to max your cards out. If you have a balance best case scenario is they are paid each month, but at least don’t carry a balance that’s more than 30/40% of the total credit line or it could affect your score from increasing. 
-don’t take out too many cards. Every store tries to get you to open one, just say no! And again don’t close old accounts if/when you have more than one card. Leave them open even if you don’t use it regularly. Just use it once a while and pay off, so it doesn’t become inactive and close if you don’t use it at all.
-Download credit karma. My score is in the good to excellent range which is about a 750. It will take a while to build, so just don’t overspend on those cards! Use them, but transfer money from your banking account to pay them off, otherwise you could overspend, and end up paying interest each month.

I got a simple credit card through my bank, and would use it a few times a month- gas, groceries, ect. 
then I would go home log on and pay it right off (so I wouldn't forget) 
and in just a few months I had a good credit- enough to be approved for a house loan.
