How to fix a snacking baby
I suspect my son is snacking through the day instead of actually eating until he is full.
He is 8 weeks old on Tuesday, and drinks soy formula. He gets his daily dose of probiotics in the morning. Up until a few days ago, he was drinking 4 oz bottles dry, and sometimes we would give him an extra ounce if he seemed hungry. He ate that every 3.5-4 hours.
Now... somehow it’s changed. He will drink about 3-4 oz of formula in about 30-45 minutes. We try to get him to burp at least twice, and then I always try to entertain him for about 30-45 minutes after. He typically begins to cry around that time to take a nap. I have yet to see this kid fall asleep on his own accord. I pick him up and put him to sleep. He sleeps for about 30-60 minutes, and then he wakes up with hunger cues. He is smacking his lips, crying, aggressively sucking on his pacifier, rooting... the whole bit. By this time, it’s been at least 2 and a half hours since he last ate. I try to entertain him or pacify him until at least 3 hours after. When I give him a bottle then, he drinks maybe 3 oz within 45 minutes, however it’s typically around 2.5. From then on, he is content for about 30 minutes, and then he is back to being fussy, whinny, sucking on his pacifier, and will not stay asleep longer than a few minutes.
I have tried to pacify him all the way to 4 hours, but then I’m left with a clingy, fussy, won’t sleep baby who is desperate by 4 hours. By the time he gets the bottle, he barely makes it through the 4 oz before falling asleep.
I don’t know what to do! I don’t know if his sleeping is disrupting him or the food, but he definitely isn’t eating like he used to.
Anyone have any advice? How can I stop
Him from snacking and actually begin to establish somewhat of a schedule?
