OPK don't add up!

My FR OPK's go from light to dark to light to dark again...but never dark enough. I'm trying to catch my surge because my boyfriend travels for work and has been gone since Monday and is coming home tonight for 3 days. I'm praying my surge happens when he is home this weekend. Does anymore have trouble with their OKP's doing this or their better half travels for work too?
