Does he like me back?

Back story:

I've known this guy since preschool. We were best friends until we ended up going to different middle schools. Eventually he moved back and now we are back at the same school, but we're not as good of friends as we once were.

Present:

Lately he has been talking to me more and more, a lot at [school] track, math, etc. He's funny, musical, athletic, smart, the list goes on and on. I think I'm falling for him. He's my oldest friend in the book. I just don't know if he feels the same way about me.

It all started when my math teacher sat us next to each other. He would glance at me, I would glace and him, etc etc. We started talking, he kept finding ways to touch my hands. Like highfiving, shaking hands before a trace meet, comparing hand sizes. You get the picture.

After a few weeks of small talk, hand sizing, this and that, the teacher finally switched our seating chart and he looked oddly sad. Now he sat directly across the room from me. I kept feeling like someone was watching me and whenever I looked up, he'd quickly glance away, but I knew he had been looking at me. This kept happening at track and in other classes.

At lunch a couple times a week he comes to my table and sits a few seats away from me or across from me, but he only stays for like 5ish minutes and doesn't usually say anything.

At track meets he would come up to me and ask me about my events and stuff, but then quickly run to his friends right after I was done talking. When we make eye contact in the halls or in class he either waves at me, smiles or quickly looks away.

I'm really confused. What do you think is going through his head? What's happening?
