Other uses for this?

This was gifted to my from my well meaning MIL. I know that these after market head rests are not necessarily safe to use in an infant car seat/carrier. I don’t want to just throw it away since she’s coming to visit after the birth, so I know she’ll ask about it. What else can I use this for ? I was thinking of putting it on the changing table (because I’ll probably never use it, my husband insisted on having one).

You could also put it in a bouncer or swing. Most have their own but you could simply say that "this one was better" or "you liked this one more on there". 
Oooor you could tell her the truth. Explain that its not safe and that you dont want to hurt her feelings but you dont have any use for it. Maybe it cam be returned or exchanged

I think you should tell her the truth. swing or stroller would be great BUT these are also found to push the infants head too far forward and cut off air supply. that's another reason they're not deemed safe! there are great articles on thecarseatlady.com to back up your research! My car seat cane with one in it. Not quiet as snug as the one shown but you can tell her your car seat already comes with everything it needs.

I would just be honest with her. She should also care about the baby's safety. She probably just hasn't heard of it.

My sister used one like this on the changing table to keep my nephews head supported, also in case he rolled it kind of helped hold him in place... but he is a year and some months now. 😢 he's getting so big

I don't see her asking about it . It is not like it is a big item like a stroller / infant carrier set. I would just exchange it for something else.
