Is it stealing?

Question

If you work at a place that deals with food and food that was supposed to get thrown out you eat instead, is that the same thing as stealing?
EX: someone that works at a fast food restaurant eating a burger that they were supposed to throw away because a customer decided they didn’t want it.

Legally, if your manager / supervisor doesnt give the okay for you to have it- yes it is considered stealing and in most companies it is a fireable offense, even if it was just going to get thrown away. 
It’s a stupid reason to get fired, but the rules have to be the same across the board. Otherwise you have people ringing things in all the time and all these “guests” who decide they dont want items.

I've worked at a mcdonalds, a burger king, a subway, and a little caesars. Per their company rules (though differently owned franchises may be different), it 100% was stealing unless you had permission from your manager.

If you go by the definition yes it’s stealing but I honestly feel throwing out the food is much worse. It’s such a damn waste when people are made to throw the food out when it could be donated or given to the workers that put in their time and effort there to make it.

Technically with that example, “yes”. But I have to say, when I worked at McDonalds during my high school years, when we had leftover food at closing, we were allowed to take any of it home before tossing it out. Why waste it?

By corporate rules, yes. Ethically, no. Such corporate policies are completely unethical.

We’re allowed to eat what we want where I work. Just made some fruit salad but you’re feeling a little hungry? Go grab that $6 tub and eat it! Want a coffee but don’t want to pay $3? Have it for free! Basically it depends on what the rules are. If they let you take it then no, it’s not stealing. If they explicitly tell you not to eat it then yes it’s stealing

Yes, it is stealing. Seems like a harmless thing, but there will always be someone to cheat the system. For example, I want a specific sandwich, but make it really sloppy. The customer is does not want it, so now I get to eat it. I basically got the sandwich I wanted for free because I purposely made it sloppy. Or I can just make the sandwich I want and say the customer did not want it.

It depends on who you work for and what their policies are. In most cases, it's technically stealing. Doesn't mean it's right though. There are so many people who could use that food.

I worked at Subway and if for some reason someone didn't like there sub we could eat it otherwise we would throw it, same with day old bread or cookies since after 24 hours from the time it was made we had to throw it out but if workers wanted to take home the bread or cookies we could also if the cookies were too soft or too hard (Subway cookie standards are very strict) we would throw them away if nobody wanted them. 
I also worked at a family restaurant that did buffet and we were able to take home 1 box full of pizza if there were leftovers after the buffet otherwise it would be trashed.
