Is it weird to eat out at a restaurant alone ?

I want to visit this japanese restaurant when I go to the city to take a class and I have no friends to go w/, since I have to go by myself. There's a good looking waiter who works there, and he was kinda nice last time.. last time, I went w/ my mom, so I didn't feel able to talk to him. If things go well, maybe I'll keep going.

Is it weird/awkward to go by yourself? I don't want to look like a loner, or to have him think I'm only going for him. :/
