Buying your SO's mother a mothers day gift..?

My SO and I have been talking about getting married and having a serious future together. We aren't married or even engaged yet, so she isn't technically my mother in law, but I do adore her. Is it inappropriate to get your boyfriends mother a gift for mothers day if you aren't married or engaged? I don't want to make her uncomfortable.

I don't think it's inappropriate. Actually pretty sweet of you. There's nothing wrong with giving a gift to the woman who birthed and raised the man you love.

I have been with my SO for two years now. And his mother passed five years ago. The first year we were together I asked if I could visit her grave and meet her. He was hesitant. But took me. I cried, left her flowers and thanked her. He cried. And I'm doing the same thing this year, even though he's deployed. She's still my mother in law, even though we aren't married yet or the fact she isn't even here. I don't think there is anything wrong with getting her a gift. I think she would appreciate it a lot!

I wouldn't. If my husband was a little more thoughtful and sent his own mother a Mother's Day gift I wouldn't bother to even being married. Just in my personal relationship with her I don't feel like she would care at all if she got something from me but she would LOVE it if my husband thought to send her something. He doesn't, so I send something and just put all our names on it. I also don't expect him to send anything to my mom. I kinda think it really depends on your relationship with your mother in law and how you feel that a gift would be received. Since you're just dating though I don't really think it's something you need to do if you're not sure how she'll take it but if you're comfortable with it than go for it! I don't think anyone hates getting presents :)
