Should marriage licenses be required?

Why can't we just have a marriage certificate signed by clergy and still could be filed . So should a license be required.

They're really not that hard to obtain, and they're more legally binding, which allows things like taxes, rights to decide things in hospitals, proper division of assets in case of divorce, etc to be handled more efficiently.

If you want the legal protections that come with marriage, yes. If you want to be married but don't want legal protections or the possibility of facing legal divorce, then just have a ceremony with no license. 
Having a document signed by someone with no legal authority does no good. If marriages we're only performed by clergy, a large portion of society couldn't get married.

Yes a marriage license is a legal document and for a legal marriage it's required. If you're only interested in marriage in the eyes of God,  clergy is enough... But don't  expect anyone to accept it as a legal and binding marriage

in some countries, you can only get married through the government officials. it's great to live in a country where anyone can be licensed.
