Do you trust your Country's history?

Question

In North Korea, they tell their people all of these negatives stories about the US. It got me thinking that It makes sense to tell your own people that it is everyone else fault. So how do we know OUR country is telling the truth? I think a lot of history is White washed and our history books rarely tell all sides of a tragedy/story. Do you trust your history classes are telling the truth? Why or why not?

Mmmm I think here in Canada they’re starting to tell a version of the truth now that the government is at least pretending to care about reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. But I’m not really in touch with grade school curriculum anymore.

All the shit I learned up until my sophomore and junior year in high school, no. My world history teacher and my US history teacher were the type if women to not bullshit their students and we did not learn out of a textbook. They taught real history. Unbiased history. I was very lucky to have those two amazing teachers.

I feel like the U.S tries to sugar coat everything they have done to other countries and tries to justify things they shouldn't have done, in school you don't learn about how bad Racism was and is. I don't trust a lot of the information we get fed because it's all changed and toned down.And everything is whitewashed for sure! I also hate that we don't really learn about other countries history very much, I would have loved to learn about Cuba when I was younger from school but that never happened.

You can not trust the history you learn in your youth. It is spoon fed nationalism. No one “discovered” America. It existed. The land was stolen using bloodshed and force. The country was taken, then populated with stolen people forced into slavery. We have yet to go to war for noble reasons. There is ALWAYS financial gain. We have negatively impacted our own budget and economy via the war machine. Look at how our soldiers are paid. Look at how they are treated when they come home. It’s despicable. The way we see ourselves as opposed to the way the world sees us is delusional. America needs a reality check. We create our own enemies by invading their country, destroying it, and leaving. Desert Storm created 911. And it was all over oil. And the Bush families companies profited. Cheney’s companies profited when we returned. We still occupy the Middle East to protect our interests. It’s not for noble reasons. And our soldier pay the price 😒

Well to be fair, there is a lot of negative about the US lol 😂 just kidding!!... kinda. Anyway, I’m a history major and this stuff interests me a lot. So no, I don’t trust history because it’s all one sided so we need to remember that and teach our children to remember the author’s purpose and that most of history does not include the perspective of most minorities including women, indigenous people, etc.

History is always told by the winners... who often won by dispicable means. And they get to cover up the extent of the wrongdoings because they don't want to lose the nationalism of the people.

US covering up minorities stories and experiences. I heard that there were textbooks in Texas calling people sold into slavery "workers."

In Europe the Roma population has little to no say, they experienced horrible atrocities not only in the holocaust- which is barely mentioned- but every step of the way including forced sterilization and banning, causing many of them to flee to US/ Canada. This isn't taught in schools, if you want to find this information you have to do your own research.

Not to mention the true history of Native Americans being raped, children murdered, men's hands cut off and being forced to wear them around their neck to show they had no power.

It's so shameful. And worse that the countries try to hide it and pretend it wasn't that bad.

Well, there's definitely two sides to any story. And even the good guys can do bad things. So, I trust that we a skewed history based on the winner's side.

I always got a varied view on history here in the UK, my history teachers were AMAZING though. I also do a lot of my own searching and watch a lot of documentaries (many of them on the same topic so I can get as much info as possible). I'm from the UK
