What can I eat during labor ?

FTM so I think I heard hard candy is ok to eat like jolly ranchers as well as Ice chips and clear liquids to drink. Is there anything else? that it’s ok to eat while in active labor? and how many hours before can you not eat food or snacks if delivering naturally?

You can usually have anything they just advise against. When you go through transition the body can only do one job, birth a baby. It can’t digest etc as well (at least not a priority) so you’ll likely vomit it up. Also it’s not good incase you end up needing emergency c section and be put to sleep and vomiting while under can cause problems for your lungs. Once you hit active labour stop eating. You can have a lollipop to help with dry mouth I read today and clear fluids. I think from memory because I hate lollipops I had sone Gatorade which I had a few sips but I just drank water and didn’t even feel like eating anyway

I was not allowed to eat once we got to hospital even though I complained many times. They would not even let me drink water- I could only eat the ice chips and they took it away once it had melted.
Then just to really top it off - I finally have her and they brought in food - and put it across the room. I had to text my mom to come in the room and get it for me. And then of course it was gross! So for number two we will be more prepared with food I actually want after labor.

Every dr has different “rules” they like to follow. I requested to be allowed to do and eat whatever I wanted and my dr was totally on board with everything. I basically wanted to feel like I was at home and the only reason I had my baby at the hospital was to make sure I had the help if I needed it. I ended up getting an epidural after 39 hours of labor and pitocin due to preeclampsia at 36w. I did end up eating a little bit of food while in labor but most of it just sounded terrible and I had been vomiting for a few days prior to going into full labor. Still vomited during the final transition and my body was saying that it was time to have my baby girl. She came out in 7 minutes of pushing and was just perfect! I think I could have eaten an entire restaurant of food by that point...I made up for it the following weeks as breastfeeding made me a starving beast!

I ate a Big Mac meal about 4 hours before my c section. In my defense, I didn’t know my water was going to break so I couldn’t plan around it. As my hubby reminded me, eating isn’t ideal but they do DO emergency surgeries all the time and you don’t hear about high mortality rates because of them. Just something to think about. BUT I would recommend playing it safe because others can be right about the vomiting and what not.

personally when I was in labour I wasn't thinking about food at all !! defiantly wasn't hungry and I would have puked  if I did eat anything lol

If you labor at home as long as possible, you can eat what you want. I ate lunch at home but ended up going in to the hospital at around dinner time. At about 9 I begged for food so the nurses brought me a tray of stuff. I ate while in active labor (no epidural). I ended up with an emergency csection about five hours later.

Most hospitals won't let you eat anything. I was only allowed ice chips during labor. You can eat pretty much immediately after giving birth, once they clean you up.
