Generational Curses ?

I've heard people say this before, generational curses are real, ex. Grandmother drug addict, then the daughter and the next generation or promiscuity, alcoholic, angry and violent, murderers, child abuse etc. I think people have tendencies of what their family is BUT if they chose to they can overcome them.

Just like someone in poverty can “choose” to not be poor?
These are very real things through a micture of environment and genetics. You will have the deck stacked against you but you technically can overcome it. But letsnot fool ourselves that anecdotal stories of overcoming the odds replace statistics and researxh

Addiction, abuse, and many other things can run in families but I think referring to it a a curse is not a great choice of words.

In my spiritual practices it's called ancestral trauma, and it will keep repeating itself in subsequent generations until it's healed.

I think it is more genetic and environmental than a curse. Addiction has been proven to run in families, and bad habits, criminal activity, etc. can all be passed down environmentally (e.g. if that's all you see growing up, that's probably what you're going to end up doing).

Genetics are very interesting. As far as addiction goes I believe people who have addiction in their families could have more addictive tendencies... BUT I also believe it all starts with a choice. The argument of "but my DNA made me" wont get you very far. I believe they are real to an extent. Also, you live what you learn.  If you grow up around promiscuity then youre likely to grow up viewing it differently than someone who grew up in a family where it was either hushed hushed or didn't happen.

I’m not 100% sure but I’ve heard a few different times that there is a gene that makes it easier to get addicted to things, and it would make sense. Plus the fact that when you grow up in that kind of setting, and it’s all right there in front of you and you have easy access to drugs and such, that and the people around you who are doing drugs kind of glorify it. My dad has major addiction struggles and I myself have stayed away from it so much that I don’t even take medicine when I’m sick, just because it gives me such anxiety. 
And as for promiscuity, I can also see how that would be a family thing, my grandma cheated on my grandpa for another man, and all my aunts have cheated on their spouses at least once, even my own mother, and I could see how them seeing my grandma cheat, when they where young, and get away with it, has somehow made them think it’s okay. But it’s still not an excuse, they all very well could have used some self control and empathy before doing what they did. 
But honestly it is a thing, how you are raised and what you see and learn determines how you think, and if you grow up seeing things happen that are shown as an okay thing, you’ll honestly believe it’s okay to do those things and repeat the cycle. Of course there are people who realize what they see isn’t okay and they break the pattern

I mean my family has a history of one women having twins every 3rd gen. so far true, next up is me an my older sis. I hope it's me lol.

I think you can be who you choose to be. My grandparents on one side, and my grandfather on the other side were alcoholics, one aunt is, and one is a recovering alcoholic.  Some of my cousins are and some of us are not.  I was very aware of my drinking habits and had no desire to become like them. I had goals in life, and while at times I felt myself getting a little crazy I would pull myself back. Sometimes you learn from watching or hearing about those who suffered from an addiction. I guess it can also depend on your personality and what you strive for in life. Just my opinion.

Things like addiction can run in families but that’s more of a genetics issue than a curse.
Poverty can be generational but that’s due to a variety of factors (socioeconomics, for example).

Well in MY family gen curses have been VERY real and hell only a few have overcome. And that's due to growing up in an entirely different environment. And even then some "curses" like addiction have been inescapable.
