Is a fancy camera worth it?

I’m thinking about buying a relatively nice camera to take pictures of my baby with! I want her life well documented. Hers and mine and my fiancé’s and stepdaughters and our future children. Should I spend the money on a nice camera or just use my iPhone?!

Here's the thing from someone who loves photography. If you're used to your I phone camera and know how to get good lighting, angle and all that good stuff use your I phone camera cause a expensive camera is not going to make you a "expert photographer" and if your not used to it and don't know how to get those good shots it's just going to look like phone camera quality anyways

We have a Sony a6000. And i love it. It’s mirror less unlike your regular DSLR cameras, so it’s quite compact too so it’s not a hassle to carry around a bulky camera. Perfect to use with a basic lens for daily point and shoot photos. But we use a portrait lens for our nice family photos. I think the difference in quality is worth it for those special moments. Even with the camera on the iPhone 8+ there’s no comparison. Here just a couple of my favourites off our camera 😊

An overly expensive camera will be wasted money if you’re only going to use it on manual. Manual won’t get you the best pictures or the best quality. The best pics you’re going to get are .raw instead of .jpeg, because then they can be edited to bring out the best of the picture. If you’re just going to take pics and leave them as is, get something less expensive that will still get good pictures.

I love that you want to do this. My mom has created a whole library of photo albums starting when I was born, with pictures that have all been put in perfect order, and I've ALWAYS loved looking through them because it's like going back in time. I like how digital photos are free, but I really miss the whole ritual of picking up prints at Kinko's, taking them home, looking at them with my parents, and helping my mom put them in an album. When I have my baby, I think I'm gonna go back to film.

I was gonna invest in a GoPro, but didn't. Took pics on my iPhone but I doubt there would've ever been enough storage to fit them all in one phone, had I never damaged it numerous times. It was such a hassle getting the pics back, and even if I was more responsible with my phone, I know I'd still regret not investing in that GoPro as I do today.
