Did you announce your pregnancy before or after getting an ultrasound? If after, how long did it take before your doctor would give you an ultrasound?

I'm wondering because my doctor cancelled my first appointment due to conducting a complicated surgery. Now I have to wait until after the holiday but I was planning on telling my family this week when I saw them. On one I wanted to be sure everything was good with the baby prior to telling them. But on the other hand this is the only time my whole family will be together throughout this pregnancy.
