Would you move or should he?

I’m currently in a relationship that is the forever one(hopefully) I’m from Canada and he’s Australian. I’m living in Australia for work and he’s willing to sponsor me to stay.  If we get married I’m really torn on what to do. Have a family and raise them here where they see my parents once a year, or make him move and they see his once a year?? 🤷🏼‍♀️

You need to talk about it. Either way, it shouldn't feel like either of you are being "made" to do anything. One thing I realized when moving around, is that nothing is permanent and just because you may move to Australia now doesn't mean in 2 or 5 or even 10 years, you both won't be somewhere else. You just need to have a conversation about your expectations.

I worked in immigration law for three years. It’s TOUGH stuff. If you want to be together, understand the laws before decides by. There may be complications. For example, if he moves to be with you, there is no guarantee he will be able to work (depends on your countries laws for nonresident spouses), or there may be a waiting list for entry of nonresident spouses (in the US it can be up to 3 years sometimes. It’s no joke).

You're both already there, so unless your parents in Canada are going to be a significant part of raising the children, I think it'll be more of a hassle to move both of you

Where would the two of you be happy? I moved from U.S. to Canada for my now husband because he absolutely didn't want to live in the states. It was hard moving away from everyone and everything I knew, but we're happy where we are.

I'm Australian and I moved to Sweden to be with my husband who I met online. Totally worth it and the best decision I ever made. Sometimes you just gotta take a chance and see how it works out.

The easiest option is you staying in Australia since you're already there. Like another person said, you don't have to stay in one place together. Although, that can be easier said than done. It takes a lot of resources to be able to move countries.

Australia would honestly be the best place for raising a child. My mother is from Australia. AU and Canada are two different worlds. But whatever place you think your family will thrive is where you need to be!

This is my brother and his gf! Except he’s Canadian and she’s Australian and they both live in Australia right now. He comes home maybe once every 1-2 years. He has a great job there now. He wants to move back to Toronto but she’s content to stay there. (They met in Toronto while she was there and he went back to Aus with her) it’s been a hot topic in their relationship for the last 3 years. Honestly, I feel for you. Currently, I live three provinces away from my family and see them once a year and it’s not enough for me. But, our jobs are here and now we have a daughter who’s life is here. Definitely weigh out the pros and cons including kids and where you want them to be. Also, the cost to fly home is super expensive and doing it once a year really eats into finances. (I find.. and I’m flying within the country) so, factor in cost as well. Also, jobs... can you both get employment easily if you move? Are your jobs better there? Are you close to his family? Do you have supports where you are or would you have better supports in Canada?

You don’t need to decide that now. You will both have the option to live with your family in both places. Things change. Just decide where you start;)
