Should the news be able to release information without the families consent?

A man was hit and killed by a hit and run, this man had mental health issues, and was out walking late (to cope with these issues). The news released the name of the man b4 even getting consent from the family. Mind you, this was within hours of the tragedy. Not only did they release his name, but his picture as well. 
Majority of the family had not been notified of the tragedy, instead the news took it upon themselves to release the information of the accident, as well as the name of the victim and picture of him.
They said it’s because he’s an adult they don’t need consent to release information, so my question is, should networks be required to notify the family of the report or should they continue to be allowed to just spread the news (for the views) with out the families consent?

Usually in cases like these, the police are involved and don't release the name(s) of the victim(s) until the family has been notified. Not sure how the news source got the name and photo already... but they shouldn't have released the info, if they were indeed aware that not all of the family had been notified.

My brother in law was killed almost 2 years ago. His body wasnt even moved from the parking lot before they had reporters approaching our family. They released his name. He was 18, there was nothing we could do.

I think it’s extremely in poor taste. A lot of the time I hear, “out of respect for the family, we are waiting to release a name until the family is notified.”
Sadly, the news can be cockroaches sometimes, and it’s a race to be the first to report something.

I wouldn't say consent, but they usually wait until families have been notified. At least, in my area they do.

That is why sometimes i hate media , they don't know the word respect all they care about is their Job. I'll be so mad if i'm in that situation (God forbid) in that time of tragedy all i want is privacy and silence.

No the news people are only doing their jobs, they get news they have to report I️t. It’s never personal, just business.

My local new outlets won’t release names until the family is informed out of respect. I read an article about a kid my age being hit by a cop in his police car and thought little about it. I got the call about an hour later that it was my childhood best friend and my aunts nephew and he passed away a few hours after. Finding out via the news website would’ve devastated me.
