Taking Spanish classes, is it worth it?

I want to learn Spanish and be fluent in it but I’m told by my Spanish speaking friends that it’s hard, and that what you learn in class is not the same as what they speak, meaning it is too proper and some people wouldn’t understand even if Spanish is their native language.

Because the Spanish used is more from Spain than Mexico, we understand it. Its still different like the way we speak. 
If you compare the way you speak to the way someone from England does, you will know you use different words here and there but you still understand. That's the only difference and why it sounds so proper. 
I had difficulty saying "you" to people older or with a higher status than me, I grew up with a word to address them...so they will teach you that as well or it's disrespectful. Idk of that's what you mean too?

Do it, it honestly is good for your brain and it’s great to even just have a go. Spanish is pretty fun if your heart is in it 👍

It is not that hard. My first language is Spanish, and I think the hardest part-maybe, is grammar, because you have “acentos” (á, é, í, ó, ú). Apart from that, as long as you practice hearing it and focus on the pronounciation of vowels, you’re set.

I was taught the informal way, then by the time I hit college, they were teaching itthe formal way. The formal way made no sense at all, I asked my aunt and she said nobody uses it, she's Puerto Rican. So in college, I was using the informal way, I still passed and it made more sense than. You have some professors who will teach informal over formal, which makes more sense, but others will go by the book, which makes no sense at all, the formal way. Personally, informal is way better, formal is like learning entire language all over again, it's crazy!!!

classes will help you learn the basics and learn the foundation. you supplement it by listening to spanish speakers, like watching spanish lamguage shows or even try watching hispanic youtubers. use it when you can and try to speak it with Spanish speakers, very helpful to do it if you have a hispanic friend. theres nothing wrong with taking formal classes.

Never have a native speaker deter your from your dream of learning a language. I have had this happen to me before and I ended up regretting it. If you want to learn a language, try!
