Marriage is just... paper??

Question

Do you believe marriage is just a piece of paper?? I see a lot of women say that nothing will change if they marry, so they just date and live together for years and years. Do you believe marriage is more than a piece of paper?? 
For those who aren’t married, does your state recognize common law marriage?? Do you fear if something medically devastating happened to you SO you would regret not being married??

To me it's a legally binding contract that comes with a lot of benefits. Do I need it to be in a life long committed partnership, no. It is nice to have those benefits though. Like if he ends up in the hospital and only immediate family members can be with him, and we aren't married, guess who can't be back there? Me. That's a benefit I'd like to have should I need it. Do I plan to be with him and only him for the rest of my life, with or without marriage, absolutely. That being said, we are getting married some time next year. Was going to be this year but we pushed it back until our rainbow is born.

Marriage is just a legal contract. Just a piece of paper. 
My husband and I share a sacred bond together that we made long before we were ever “legally married” and becoming “legally married” did not change that bond whatsoever. 
It’s fine if the ceremony is meaningful to you, and I respect that it is very important for many religions to make that vow before god, but I don’t like it when people view relationships outside of a government sanctioned marriage contract as something “less than” 
The bond is important, the legal or “official” aspect is nothing to me.

No, it’s not just paper. It’s not about the big wedding and ring and pictures. It’s also does not mean that one married couple loves each other more than a non married couple.  It is a legal binding. With benefits ( tax, health insurance.) It is a title to show you did take that step with the next person as husband and wife not boyfriend and girlfriend. It is essentially from a non romantic stand point a business contract.

I really believe in commitment but it’s hard because not everyone views commitment as marriage. If my SO believed marriage is the commitment then I want to give it to him/her because I want to show them I am committed. I do believe it’s more than paper but I respect that some people prefer common law. That’s okay too❤️

It’s just a piece of paper to me honestly. People always say “it’s not a piece of paper it’s a commitment, a promise, blahhh” but you can be in a long term relationship without marriage and have all of those things. Not to say I don’t want to ever get married.. bc I’m going to say yes when he asks.. but I’d also honestly be fine not getting married. Idc I just want to spend the rest of my life with my SO

It’s not just paper to me, but I can understand why people think. To me, it’s the final step of our relationship. You can have a ton of boyfriends, but how many times do you get married. It’s just different. I love calling him my husband. The title and the ring are important to me. It means a lot to us to be married.
