NICU for twins?

My OB said if I don't make it to 37 weeks there will be NICU time. I'd like to know, exactly what happens there. What are some of the common procedures and administered drugs etc.

I had my twins at 35w2d and they did not need NICU. They were with me the entire time except an hour or so under a warming light. They had to check their blood sugar levels every few hours, but that was just a heel prick. We all went home together after 2 nights in the hospital 😊 Almost 2 weeks old now and doing spectacular!

My twins were born at 33 weeks and we had a little over a month nicu stay for both. They needed oxygen through c pap and then got off for a few days until we started trying feeding them then they got nose cannulas for 2 months after. They had IV’s for the first week to put lipids and a few medications for them. They needed to be in a heated bed for the first 2 weeks and inclined for the first 4. They had a rough time learning to eat which is why we were there for longer than most so they used a tube through their noses to feed them. Mine also had apnea’s and Brady’s for the first couple weeks so they had to be stimulated when those happened. They were under a light for the first few days so we couldn’t hold them during that time. When we finally got to go home my girls were both still on oxygen so we had to do a trial at the hospital where we spent the night with them and got use to their apnea monitors and the oxygen tanks we’d be taking them home on. It was a really hard long experience but now we are home with 2 healthy 4 month olds and the nicu seems distant. So

My babies were born at 36 weeks (weighing 5.4 and 5.6 pounds) and did not need any NICU time. I think it’s important for OBs to tell you that NICU for preemies is a possibility but it all depends on how your baby is doing. In fact, my OB told me that my babies would probably need to be put in an incubator for a couple of days to stabilize their temperature outside of the womb, but that did not happen. I had my babies in my hospital room for the whole time and they did not need any particular treatment. Don’t worry about it and good luck to you!!

Are your babies measuring good? My sister had her son at 35 weeks after waking up to her water breaking, he was 5 pounds 4 ounces and needed no NICU time at all!

My twins were born at 36wks+1 day...no NICU. It just depends on the health of the baby. A baby could be born full term and still be in NICU.

My 31 week singleton had a 39 day NICU stay. She had IUGR though and needed a surgery at 3 days due to a bowel obstruction. I remember her being on caffine and intravenous nutrition but I dont remember anything else. She was a grow and go baby since she could breath well at birth.

It all depends on how they’re doing and there health. My son was born at 42 weeks, and was in the nicu for a week. I know twins end up in the nicu a lot, but not always!

Mine were born at exactly 36w and both needed some NICU. My daughter was only there for about 36 hours - mostly being monitored to make sure she could breathe on her own and to get her eating high calorie formula for low birth weight (4-14). Then they do a “car seat test” before discharging them, where they put them in their car seat for 90 minutes with the monitors on them and make sure they tolerate it ok. My son needed about 3 days there (they call them “wimpy white boys”) because he couldn’t get his breathing under control and had a partially collapsed lung. He was intubated (had a breathing tube) for a little while and then just had a CPAP on his nose. He also had an NG tube to feed him while he had the breathing help. They would occasionally take him off the breathing help to see if he could do it in his own. One day he wasn’t doing great and that night they came to my room and told me he was off everything and doing great. I couldn’t believe he turned it around so quickly! I was not expecting it. He passed his car seat test after that. They both had to stay in the hospital for a night outside the NICU to make sure they were doing ok and eating fine and then we could all go home. The hospital allowed me to keep my room for free until they were both discharged. That allowed my husband and daughter to also stay so we were all together and I wasn’t going back and forth with one twin home and one in NICU. It was amazing! They even kept feeding me. The hospital called it “motelling.” As I understand, that room policy is not typical so you may want to ask your hospital what they can do to support you if one or both of your babes is in the NICU when you get discharged.

Mine were born at 34w2d and they stayed for 15 days in NICU.
One of my daughters had absolutely nothing but she didn’t have the stamina to suck and swallow, so she had for 9 days a small tube to her stomach to feed her. On the meantime she practiced BF. Then we moved to bottles and BF.
The other one had some trouble breathing and used a halo for oxygen for 3 days and then 2 more days with a cpap. She also needed 24 hours of light for jaundice. She was also for 9 days with the feeding tube and after that a mix of bottle and boob.
Non of them had issues regulating temperature.
During their whole stay they were connected to monitors to check HR, oxygen levels and blood pressure. Temperature was checked every 3 hours and everyday they would run different tests on them.
I brought them home after 15 days being totally healthy and not needing anything else.
They were born with 2,7 and 2,4 kg, which helped a lot for their early release.
