Should baby have the father's surname or the mother's?

Carol • Wed, May 13 • Living in Beijing. My daughter is almost 8 and my son is almost 4.

My husband and I discussed giving our second child my surname, but when he mentioned it to his mother she was upset. I hadn't thought it was that big of a deal, but maybe I'm wrong. What do you think? Do you think there are benifits one way or the other?
