This varies widely. It took me years to fully let go of my ex husband. I was deeply scarred, sad, and convinced no one could se silly satisfy me like he could. He was my ‘first love’. Getting divorced was easy, I knew what he did was wrong and I love myself enough to follow thru, but emotionally, I was broken. We were together for 3 years.
A friend of mine was with his ex for a total of 10 years. They split, and he was an emotional mess for 2 years. Day to day life was fine and functional but as far as a new relationship, he didn’t trust anyone. He still struggles with it, more than two years later.
He wasn’t actively trying to deal with it tho, back burner kind of guy.
So..IMHO it depends on you, what you actively CHOOSE ( to hold on or let go )

Everyone is different. My bf now was with his ex for 5 years and we started going out only after they were broken up for about less than 2 weeks. It was rough for us bc he still had feelings for her and he was so fresh out of that relationship but we worked through it and we just made 2 years in August and we’re doing great now and building a future for us ❣️
