Hispanic or Latino?

If you fall into this category, which do you prefer?  I’ve never cared.  In college the popular term (at least that which was spoke of in Chicano Studies courses, was Latino.  However, as a career woman a certain colleague always corrects “Latino”.

Latino is from Latin America. Hispanic in todays context a country with roots from Spain, or Spanish speaking. So for example Spaniards are Hispanic, not Latino. I'm Dominican so I use both

If someone is speaking in general, not knowing me well or whatever, either is fine. I will probably correct to Chicana. My SO prefers Chicano as well.

Not all Latinos are Hispanic  .... Hispanics come from countries where Spanish is spoken. I consider myself Hispanic.

So in school (university) I was taught that the roots are hiSPANic and LATIN (as in Latin based language). So everyone was Latino was also Hispanic except they may prefer not to be associated with the Spaniards.  Then Latino was a Hispanic person but the term simply referred to one who speaks a Latin based language.  This exclude Italians, Frenchmen, etc because the premise is they are Hispanic also.

From what I gather you’re considered Hispanic if you’re from Spanish speaking origins  and Latino if you’re origins are from a Latin American country but don’t necessarily speak Spanish like Brazil .

I’m Hispanic, but I am not Latina. 
For extra credit: Being a white-Hispanic, I don’t consider myself a POC; I am white, and honestly, it took me years to come to terms with this 😬😬

Latinx means from a South or Central American country. Hispanic means from a Spanish speaking country.
