Periods while breastfeeding

Logan

Me and my husband aren’t trying and timing for a baby more like if it happens it happens. I have had periods while fully breastfeeding since i had my daughter. I have missed maybe one or 2 periods but for the most part i have a normal period. We often have sex while I’m ovulating but i haven’t got pregnant yet. I haven’t talked to my doctor because it’s really not a big deal since we aren’t exactly trying. But my daughter is now 13 months old and I’m still breastfeeding every 3-4 hours and during the night. Do you guys think I can get pregnant right now or no? TIA! Tell me your experiences!

Hi Logan, I've told my story like a million times now but when I was TTC #2, I got my first period back 9 months ppm. We tried pretty non chalantly like you are describing until about 14 months than I started using OPKs and realized I was ovulating a week later than the app predicted. We got pregnant at 16 months. Essentially the second cycle of figuring out when I was ovulating. My periods at that time were 25-45 days so it was all over the place. OPKs really helped if you're trying to get serious about it.

I️ know from tracking ovulation that I️ ovulate late, then usually start my period 5-6 days later. I’m breastfeeding my 9 month old, and have been TTC for three months. So, I️ have a short luteal phase, which is often the case with breastfeeding moms, and even if you do have an egg fertilized, it has no time to implant before you have your period. The only way to correct the short LP is to cut back on breastfeeding, or to stop breastfeeding altogether. Also, some people take vitamin B6 to lengthen LP, but that can decrease your milk supply if you take too large a dose. I’m in the camp of: if it doesn’t happen I️ suppose I️ should just be focusing on feeding my baby, rather than trying to make another (keeping in mind that I️ truly would like another). It sounds like you’re relaxed about TTC another...have you tracked when you ovulate to see if you have a short LP?

Yes, most likely late ovulation. Because breastfeeding suppresses certain hormones necessary to ovulation, your body will try to ovulate at the regular time, fail, and then “retry” ovulation later...probably delaying your period.

I usually get my period a week late like you! I’m pretty sure every month i ovulate late! So funny cause most women don’t get period while breastfeeding but my daughter is slowly eating less and less. We both don’t stress about have big another i just get worried every month when I’m a week late and then get a negative on a test. But maybe it’s just late ovulation..
