well... actually WITH YOUR PEDIATRICIAN'S APPROVAL you can start feeding your child solids at 4 months. but your child has to be ready for it and your pediatrician will be able to tell you if they are (so it's not a choice you just make one day on your own) otherwise you should wait until 6 months. we started my son on things his pediatrician okayed at 5 months because my son started teething at three months. at 5 months old he was sitting on my lap while we were in taco Bell and he grabbed my taco and took a bite like lightning fast. it was crazy! we were able to pull it out of his mouth before he could try and swallow it (lol not without getting bit several times lol). so the pediatrician was like, well... he seems to think he's ready lol, so since he could sit up by himself for the proper amount of time we started giving him solids. but this is definitely a talk to the doctor kind of thing

4/5 months is a good time I mean if you look at some of the baby foods they have it has as early as 4 months. I started with the basics apples, bananas etc I would start with apples and try it for a week to see how it goes then go to another one

I wait until 6 months. They may seem to want your food and have hit a other markers (eg. Sitting up unsupported). However their gut itself still has to finish developing and be ready to digest the food that is being offered.

my sons pediatrician always okayed at 4 months to start baby food. never had a problem. as long as they can sit up.

WITH PEDIATRICIAN APPROVAL you can usually start letting baby taste things at 4 months. A little bit of apple sauce or a thin veggie puree. That sort of thing, but I don't think it can be really considered eating a meal. As for actually eating enough to make a difference in the amount of formula or breastmilk, it'd probably be more like 6 months
