Straight to convertible or infant seat first?

Question

I know I want a convertible car seat for this baby. I was just thinking that I'd have to wake/pick baby up every time we get out of the car. Should I buy an infant seat as well?

Yes. I get nervous carrying a newborn baby who can't support his head to the car, plus my bag, keys, lock the door etc. The infant seat is safer in my opinion. Also, they tend to fall asleep in the car when they're tiny and you don't want to wake a sleeping baby, this helps keep them asleep getting in and out. Also, I'm not comfortable using a regular stroller until they can sit up or at least hold their head up. So I use the infant seat until baby sits up, then switch. It's worth it in my opinion  (I have 3 kids)

That kinda defeats the purpose of a convertible car seat and seems like a waste of money. But I mean if you have more than one car and the money then go for it.

Most hospitals make you have an infant seat to take your baby home in.

I’d say yes. Personally like you said I don’t want to have to wake my baby. Also grocery shopping! There is no way I would have been able to shop with a newborn if I didn’t have one. He was too little to sit in the cart, I would never be able to hold him in my arms while pushing a cart and trying to find and grab the items I need. While using a carrier is an option again it’s still easier to just keep babe in the car seat and put him in the cart. Is it an extra expense.  Of course. Could you live without it? Of course. But sometimes an extra $100 is worth it to make things a little easier on yourself.

For baby #3 We personally are skipping the infant seat this time. We switched our last baby to a convertible at around 4 months and it was just so much easier. I babywear though, so transferring a sleepy babe to a carrier only to fall back to sleep a few moments later was never a big deal for us. But I can totally see how an infant seat for others are more appropriate.

You Could live without a infant seat, but having One will definitely make things easier. I had the same dilemma at first, but since it looks like I will be having a small baby, i decided to go with the infant seat first.
