Quote/phrase tattoo in a different language?

I was thinking about getting "Beautiful soul" in french but I'm iffy about it because I'm not french and I'm afraid it'll mean something else like "Potato". I was wondering how other people felt about it.

i don't get why people get tattoos in a language they have no connection to, but french is a beautiful language so i can kind of understand it. i would contact a French teacher at a high school near by and ask for a translation so you know you're getting the right phrase.

Love the idea of a quote or phrase in another language, but like what @Sarah said you got to do your research. I actually have a tattoo of a quote in Arabic that means "know your worth". But I actually understand a little bit of Arabic and asked a friend if it says what it means.

I would only do it if you know the language or the language has a special meaning or connection for you (like if your grandmother/best friend/someone you love is french or speaks french, or if you went on a trip to France that changed your life, or something like that). Otherwise I honestly think tattoos in a foreign language that has no meaning whatsoever to you are...honestly kind of tacky. But, this is coming from a person who has been working her ass off for five years to achieve fluency in French (yay, me!), and who is passionate about learning and preserving languages and linguistic diversity, and who wants to study linguistics (which is the science of how languages work) for the rest of her life. Lol, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Just find a native French speaker and get them to translate it for you so you can be sure it says what you think it says. I am not Spanish but have 2 Spanish tatts and am also planning on getting one in French although I'm also not French and then another in Italian but I am actually Italian. I've always loved languages and speak all 3 but still double check to make sure I've correctly translated the words and it means the same thing I'm trying to say!
