I've been wanted to dye my hair but I'm scared to dye it bc it's already pretty damaged

Don’t dye it if it’s damaged. Give ur hair a break. Put some deep conditioning in. Get a hair cut to get the dead ends off, etc

You can do semi permanent, which won’t damage your hair, ora demi permanent which I just did to get rid of an overgrown balayage, so I can grow my hair out and stay my natural color! Go to Sally’s beauty supply and ask for help! It’s definitely trial and error and I suggest using a semi first or buy both and try one and then go over it the next day with whatever they say to use if that doesn’t work out. But make sure to buy gloves, a small hand held detangling brush(helps disperse the color) and a developer if you’re doing demi or permanent). I’m literally never going to a salon again other than to get it cut, because hair  dye is so cheap and once you find the shade you need, it’s sooo easy!!!

It can damage it yes. Stay away from the box stuff and it’s better to go darker than lighter, bleach is the most damaging but go for it
