Break up prior to deployment ??

So this guy I’ve been seeing just dumped me because he believes that this would hurt less in the long run vs us getting even more involved with each other ( which I’m already in love with him ) when we were new he told me what to expect and warned me of the risks etc I told him we’d take it little by little since he doesn’t deploy til next year . And we happily agreed to go through this together regardless. So he just got back from being away at JRTC for a month and I went to go see him and got caught up and didn’t want to have to go to the visitor center so I went home ( Bc going on base alone gives me major anxiety idk why but it just does ) and called him and let him know . We wound up talking for almost 2 hours and he basically told me realistically he felt he had no other choice but to cut it off . But he confused me and was like I’ll see you tomorrow and I’m like wait you just said we broke up ? Granted poor me crying on the phone confused and heart broken . I was like you say you are distracted by me and you can’t have that when deployed so if you’re going to dump me you have to cut it off completely otherwise there’s no fucking point. If we pull the oh we aren’t together but we are talking and carrying on as if we were we still miss each other and want each other etc . So I will stay thinking of him and have feelings for him still it’s not an easy flip of a switch to be withdrawn and not care . I’m just very hurt even though he told me he “ cares “ about me and how it hurts him as well but “ it’s for the best “

But really there are couples that survive deploying I just want some opinions
