My ex of 10 years and me split up 4 months ago, today we had sex outta no where! He says he doesn’t know where we’ll end up but has been almost having me at arms length. He’s not a bad guy at all and neither one of us have been with someone else. Why would he tell me this last part? Does he love me? Or does he want his cake and eat it to?

I don't think that convo shows whether or not he loves you. 
I think he's saying he enjoyed it and would be open to it and enjoy the random hook ups in the future. But he also wants you to be okay with it as well and not pressure you into anything. 
Proceed with caution! Also make sure you use protection or make sure you're aware if he does hook up with someone else between now and when/if you hook up again.
