Cloth diapers??

Question

I'm a FTM and I would love to use cloth diapers. Financially and for the environment. I feel bad throwing diapers out!

I told my family I was thinking about cloth diapers and they all told me to give up because it would be too hard.

Any tips to help? What were your experiences with cloth diapers? What would you recommend?

(We were planning to use disposables for the first few months and then switching to cloth. )

I used cloth with my first and can't wait to use them with this baby. You have the upfront cost of buying the diapers , but they pay for themselves within a month or two with cost saved in disposables. If you want to do cloth from the beginning, it is cheapest to use prefold cloth diapers and a cover. Then when little one is about 3-4 months old, you can switch to a one size diaper. I personally prefer a hybrid diaper such as Grovia all in 2(AI2). There are many types and you can find info at cloth101.com !  As for the hybrid...it's a waterproof shell with a lining much like a swimsuit's, and organic cotton liners that snap in. The beauty is that when baby simply pees, you just snap out the old liner and snap in a new one.  I bought 15 shells and 30 liners, this allowed me to do laundry every 2-3 days. It cost me about $500 to get started, which included the 15 shells, 30 liners, and 4 packs of biodegradable disposable liners( these are great for when you are out). And I'm sure you are worried about laundering them but it's really no big deal. With newborn poop you just wash them, once they start eating food and poo becomes more solidified you shake it off into the potty.  ( a diaper sprayer can be helpful with sticky poo, costs about $30). If you are worried about contamination in your washing machine, just run a load of towels on hot cycle after you wash your diapers!

Cloth diapers are really no more work than disposable diapers. Just exchange running to the store and spending money with running a load of laundry. We use all in one, one size diapers (BumGenius Freetimes) and flushable liners with my son (1-1/2 years old). That way there's no additional poop splashing or spraying, just roll it up and flush it. When he was breastfed it all just went in the washer. It's been super, super easy and so much more cost effective. I don't know about most moms but I would rather go downstairs and do a load of laundry than try and pack a baby up and go to the store for diapers.

I was going to use them previously but then miscarried and decided to not use them this time. I have a big sink in my laundry room that would be very helpful since you have to clean up the poop before throwing it into the wash. I think it would be difficult but in the long run its cheaper. I know some moms use cloth and disposable.

Check into cloth diaper services!! I have a couple companies in my area, sub of Detroit that will bring fresh diapers every week to your doorstep and pick up the dirty ones! So you don't have to wash!
