Is it rude to ask people if they are TTC?

So this stems from a situation in my life that I will explain below..:but for the CC question—Is it rude to ask people if they are TTC or considering having more children?

My situation that made me think of this question.

We announced to my in-laws that we are pregnant again(we have a 1 year old). I was talking to my MIL about how this pregnancy wasn’t planned and I wasn’t even sure I wanted 2 kids. I told her I already have it planned to get my tubes tied right after this baby is born, because after this one I’m for sure done!! She went on to say “but if this one is a girl you don’t want to try one more time for a boy? You don’t want somebody to carry on our family name?”

I just thought the whole thing was so rude. This isn’t the first time she’s done this. At thanksgiving she asked if we were going to try for another soon.(we were pregnant at the time but hadn’t told anybody yet). I just find it rude to ask people if they are TTC or wanting more kids.

What does everyone else think??
