Should Gandhi be criticized?
Since we are in the midst of discussing controversial figures (Malcolm X), I thought I'd bring up another.
Mohandas Gandhi is known as a peaceful hero. He is praised as a religious thinker, a pacifist, and a strong leader. He was against the caste system, and wanted Indians to be equal. But does he deserve the reverence?
I know he's quoted with many peaceful and beautiful sayings, but he also said things like this:
"...general belief seems to prevail in the Colony that the Indians are a little better, if at all, than savages or the Natives of Africa".
To add to that, he called black Africans Kaffirs, which is like saying n*ggers.
While in South Africa during apartheid, he fought to keep Indians higher in the law than black Africans, and agreed with the white supremacist views of separating blacks, because he thought they should be lower than whites and Indians and it disturbed him that they would be mixed.
He also blamed female victims of sexual abuse for enticing men. He said women who were raped lost their value as human beings. He said women who used contraception were essentially whores (it leads to "hideous promiscuity").
People who praise Gandhi say he was only speaking as any man of his time would, that he was misunderstood, and that he wasn't racist or sexist. They say his good is far greater than his wrongdoings or perceived bigotry.
