IUD string disappearance

When I would do my monthly string check I would make note of if they were there. For about three months they disappeared without a trace. I would check and all I would feel was my cervix (my boyfriend didn't feel them either). But in December they seemed to pop up out of the blue (I only found this out because my boyfriend). Has this happened to anyone else? I feel like I'm the only one.
