What should I do

Me and my boyfriend just recently broke up. He wants to still be friends with me because he stills cares about me but I don’t know. I want to be with him so bad, but he says that he doesn’t want to go back to the “old him”( he was mentally abusive, lying, partying and drinking)and hurt me so that’s why he wanted to end it. The crazy part of it all is that he was just telling how much he loved me and wanted to be with me and then he wants to break up and be friends. I know I sound selfish but I want to be with him and help. Should I tell him that, should I be his friend or none of the above. I need advice from others
