On Godparents

Zebadiah

My boyfriend and I aren’t very religious but we have an extremely close friend we want to appoint as our daughters godfather, but the more reading up I do on it, it seems to mainly be a religion thing. We are mainly looking for someone who can be her caregiver if something happens to her, and help guide her and be there for her in ways we can’t, we plan to take our daughter to church so she can learn her own views on religion but not force anything on her. And when I googled it, it said godparents are a religious thing, but others who are also not religious held different kinds of ceremonies and called them something else like “guide parents”

But from what I gather giving the chosen people or person the right to your child in the event of something happening to both you and you special someone, isn’t that a legal matter not a religious matter? How do I go about finding the paperwork I need or information I need to even begin to ask our friend if he would like the honors of being a part of our family?
