Potty training before new baby arrives?

Question

So I’ve been trying to somewhat plan ahead because I can only imagine how hard it would/will be to have two in diapers. My son is currently 18 months and we’ve slowly introduced him to a toddler potty. But I’m going to be honest he’s a bit slow and I know it’s going to take awhile. The next baby is due in August and I’m wondering if he would be easier to get him potty trained this year or wait until he’s older even though that might be when we have a newborn?

We are by no means forcing him into potty training. If he picks it up great and if not no biggie. If can’t hurt to slowly introduce him to it.

I don't understand where this belief that "kids aren't ready/capable until almost 3" what a load of malarkey! back in the 50's it was common for Americans to be potty trained at 1 year. it's really interesting to Google potty training worldwide and see the differences between cultures.           My daughter is just about 1 year now and she's been making strides on her potty. we also got the kind that "flushes" and looks like the grown up potty. She has a somewhat cautious personality so I figure if it takes months upon months, so be it but it absolutely doesn't hurt to get her introduced to the routines early. we're also due with baby #2 in early September. I'm hoping she'll be mostly trained by then but no pressure, it's okay if she isn't ready. right now, she will consistently poop (and sometimes pee) on her potty in the morning. that's the only time she's constant about though. we try after meals and snacks and anytime she starts to make the poop grunt I'll hurry her to the potty. I figure for her age, as long as she can sit on the potty without a diaper for a few minutes (enough time to read through at least one special potty book) that's a success for us. we may try to up the ante this summer when we can be outside more. but for now, I think slow and steady is what works for us 👍

Haha I’m in the same boat except mines younger! My boy is 13 months and I’m due in September. I guess I know people that have had their LOs trained at 18 months so that’s what I’m going to attempt to do too. I got the baby bjorn potty that’s really small for their little physique and so far I just have him practicing sitting on it when I go potty and I make a SSSS noise. I need to research it more but yeah, wouldn’t it be nice to get them potty trained young? A lot of articles out there say it’s kind of unnecessary to wait until 3 like what you hear more about.

Read the book called parent-speak. It's not fair to our kids to impose our deadlines on their development or rush them for the sake of our convenience but unfortunately it happens all too often. I think 18 months is way too young but my son was decently on his way to being potty trained at around 2 and a half. 
I would start introducing the potty and seeing if he has interest but if he's not interested then don't force it, just try again in a few months. Learn his cues.
There's no benefit to forcing him and really by the time August rolls around the amount of diapers you would change with him would be minimal anyway even if he didn't end up potty trained by then.

My oldest was potty trained at 18 months, my middle at 22 months, and my youngest at 17 months. 
I let them go naked, and reward with M&Ms;, Cheerios, skittles, etc. Anything small but yummy.
It’s never taken more than 3-4 days. My middle one did have to have a nighttime pull up until almost 3. The other two were day AND night trained within the 3-4 days.

My baby boy isn't even 6 months old yet and he is well on his way with potty training. He loves it. I bought a toilet that has a handle to 'flush' and he is so excited to flush after he goes. At that age, I'm holding him on the toilet to help him go. He still wears diapers and uses them, but at this point he uses his toilet more than diaper as long as it isn't sleep time. And that will get better once he can go to his potty himself rather than how often he goes rather than relying on me knowing when he needs to go.
I have gotten some judgemental comments that I shouldn't push my baby, but I've also gotten positive surprised reactions of "I didn't know that was possible." Don't let others negativity get to you. If the potty training is a stress for your little one then maybe they're not ready yet, but there's no need to wait for interest in the toilet. There's nothing wrong with training around the average age of 2-3, but you also don't have to wait until then. Good luck to your little one 👍

Its totally up to the kid, but there is nothing wrong with getting them use to the potty. We start sitting kids on the toilet at 18 months unless their parents want to start sooner. Some are potty trained before two some take longer, but thats usually because their parents choices at home. A lot don’t start until 2 1/2 almost 3 even if their kid is ready before that. But as long as they can safely sit on the toilet you’re good. Also try and get them use to using a regular toilet early on because some kids that exclusively use the potty chairs end up scared of regular ones.

Not too young but don't force. Make it fun...throw a few cheerios in the toilet for him to "sink" or put a colored tissue paper "target" in for him to aim for. Have him sit on the potty while you read to him. Reward with favorite small snacks (goldfish crackers maybe or yogurt drops) first for just trying and then for peeing or pooping. But know that kids will potty train when they are ready. Some kids are set to go at 18th months...some won't be fully trained until much later. Even really smart kids can struggle with it. It isn't about brain smarts but body control which is different.

Don't push it. You really have to follow his cues on this one. He's still really young and most kids won't potty train until closer to age there. I understand wanting to only have one in diapers, but it really can't be forced.
