Why get married?

My boyfriend has said that he doesn’t really see the point in getting married. And the only thing I can think of is because it’s what everyone expects us to do. We still see each other being together forever and have even talked about having kids in the coming years. I mainly wanna know if anyone has decided not to get married to their SO, but still have kids and build a life together and it works out?

the reason we married was because they won't talk to your partner if you're in a hospital unless you're married, to be added to his insurance which is really good, make taxes easier, and whatnot

Lots of people decide not get married . There are people who do it because marriage means something to them. Like the people who do it because the legality of it makes it more of a commitment to them. But its totally okay for you guys to not get married. Plus common law marriages are recognized now so if anything happens you’re still considered his spouse.

We know someone who never got married to their long term partner. When she died, her half of the house was automatically inherited by her children instead of her partner. He couldn’t afford to buy it so had to sell and move which was an awful thing to have to do in the midst of mourning her death. 
If you choose to not get married, make sure you set up legal documents that clarify custody, inheritance, and visitation/power of attorney if something happens to one of you.

My moms been with her "husband" for 30 years and they aren't married. They don't see a reason to so they never have. It works if both parties agree with it.

I have been with my man for almost 10 years. We have went through unexplained infertility. We each of kids from previous marriages. But not even engaged. We don't see a rush on it. We are committed just as a married couple. So no problem with it. The marriage doesn't make it any more committed than no marriage. My ex-husband had an affair in the first month of our marriage. I was already pregnant.

There are plenty of people that don’t get married and have a great life together, as well as plenty of people that get married and end up divorced so I don’t think marriage is the be all and end all. However marriage does give you additional rights (over and above common law defacto relationships) and it’s symbolically important to a lot of people. If it’s important to you, discuss it with your SO.
