How would you handle a bully?

My daughter recently lost some teeth and kids have apparently not been kind in regards to her appearance now. They make fun of her gap and how big her teeth are. It has hurt her self esteem and she has stopped smiling. She trys not to show her teeth at all. I explained to her she can not allow someone to steel her happiness. That she is a beautiful and kind young lady whom one day will do great things. I also told her that beauty is not always about our appearance but what is inside as well. I hope one day she can see this. This is npt the first time kids have picked on her. Last year it was her hairy legs! She is only in the third grade (8) and I am looking for ways to deal with this that are practical. I want to build her confidence before it effects her permanently in ways I can't reverse. My heart hurts for her. I find her to be such a beautiful person inside and out. She doesn't deserve to feel this way. Any advice would be appreciated. I am at a loss because the school does nothing. They told me it is part of growing up! I strongly disagree.
