“Twilight sleep” the most bizarre treatment of women by male doctors!!
As you all know I usually post some very eye opening or debate worthy topics so strap yourselves in cause omg I have a doozy for you (at least I think it’s mentally insane)
Okay so from 1915-1970 doctors were basically males and in the medical books of that time basically stated that when women gave birth they basically became incompetent and worthless (it actually says that)
So a certain practice became increasingly popular and it was created by Herman doctors where they would use an anesthetic during childbirth to help with pain relief. Now the kicker is that the meds also erased the memory of childbirth all together!!
Now the drugs used were scopolamine and morphine. These drugs had dangerous side effects and were definitely not supposed to be used during childbirth. They caused a serious psychotic break. Women would bang their heads on the walls and clawing at their skin and screaming. Most women had to be restrained either with arm restraints or straight jackets during the birthing process because they were that much of a danger.
Now the women would be placed in labor beds and they would stay there until labor was over. That meant lying in their own filth and vomit 🤢. They would also be blinded with a towel.
Now as for the babies they were born severely drugged and unable to breathe because they drugs caused their nervous system to be suppressed. Now we all have heard of the old practice of babies being hung upside down by their ankles and spanked on the butt. Well it was created during this practice because the babies were barely alive.
Now the extreme fascination with the practice died down when a woman died giving birth to her third child using the technique.
At this time stories of what actually happened during the labor process by a former nurse who wrote a letter to a local magazine and detailed what happened to mothers during this process and their babies.
There’s tons more but I will post the link I read on it.
