Is he lying to me 🙄

So my boyfriend received a check from United States Treasury. Well here’s the thing... my dad said that’s for tax refunds but nowhere on the check says it’s for taxes? He said it’s from his job. He does pipeline work and I don’t have the slightest clue about what all to look out for and whatnot because I don’t use checks. My question is, do some jobs pay through this?
