At 37 weeks around 1:30 am I took my usual trip to the bathroom. Before getting there I felt my pants get very wet....crap. I was sure I had peed myself. I went to the bathroom woke up my husband and attempted to call my doctor.
Contractions then started. They we're incredibly irregular and we were sure they were just Braxton Hicks because of how odd they were. One strong one for 30 seconds, then nothing for 6 minutes. Then a cluster of them then nothing for 12 minutes. Then one quickly after that lasted 3 minutes. We were all over the place!
Finally the doctor called back and said to go to the hospital to test for amniotic fluid just in case. So we backed up older sister and took her to a friend's house and left for the hospital.
The ride was miserable. Every bump felt like a disturbance. Ever red light was an act of Satan! We called my doula 3 times with no answer.
Finally at the hospital around 4 am they put me in triage. I wanted water, I felt like I was going to throw up. The nurse tried to ask me questions which I grunted answers too. My husband couldn't come in until after the check and I was barely holding it together.
The nurse left to get the amniotic swabs looked at and during that time I felt some pressure and bore down and
.....wet the bed again. When she came back she said the amniotic swabs was negative.....so I had peed myself. Isn't labor beautiful.
She was starting to say how I was probably going to go home when she checked my cervix. Her eyes got wide. I was at 7cm.
I told her I felt like I had too poop. She said yep, that's just the baby's head getting low.
Finally my husband was allowed in. We had planned an unmedicated birth and even thoroughly packed a birth bag. As soon as he got in I told him I wanted medicine. He looked at me and said, "you can do this Adrienne." I was like you don't understand this really hurts.
They came in with an ultra sound machine to see the babies position better and tried to get an IV in me since I was group b positive.
I felt an intense urge to poop and I bore down. They kept telling me to stop. I couldn't stop and for the next 15 minutes I told them so! "I can't stop! Ahh! I can't stop!! Oh my gosh! I can't stop! Ahh." That was my mantra.
I reached down and felt his head and finally people sprang into action. Ultrasound was out aside. They gave up on the iv. They held up my legs and told me to have at it.
It hurt! But in 5-6 pushes little Griffin was here. Safe and sound. No tears at all.
4 1/2 hours from start to finish. Precipitous labor was a new word I learned today.
Griffin came at 5:19 am at 7lbs 7oz and 18 inches long.
