Bridal shower and wedding gift?

I just got invited to a bridal shower and realized that it is expected to have a gift for there and also have a wedding gift for the wedding. Is it only me who thinks this is too much?  Why both? I don't see the point of a bridal shower. To me it s so materialistic and consumeristic. What do you ladies think?

I always give a bridal shower and wedding gift. Why wouldn’t I - they’re most likely a friend or family member.

I always give a gift for the shower, and then give a card with a check at the wedding. I like celebrating with my friends/family, so I usually don’t mind. I do roll my eyes if the bride throws her own shower, that seems very gift-grabby and rude.

Doesn’t bother me too much especially if it’s someone close to me. You don’t need much I personally give a nice gift for the shower and then a little something for the wedding. Weddings are expensive and they’re paying a lot just to have you there and the gifts are just a symbol of good faith

I agree! Which is why I didn’t want a shower. The only point of a shower is to give the bride gifts. I find it completely gift gabby. My Aunt was set on giving me a shower so I invited family only. There were like 10 people. I did get gifts but most people just gave me a bottle of wine or champagne. 
Most important thing is to just do what you can afford. Get something small for the shower and the wedding.

I have always done a gift for both.  And if I do one gift I spend what I would on both gifts.  It most likely is a family member or a good friend. Way would I not.  
The bridal shower gift is for the bride to to celebrate the up coming wedding.  Could give anything she may need for her new role in life.  The wedding gift is to celebrate the wedding it self. Should gift money or anything they may need and a married couple.  
For wedding we give a card with money.  And for the bridal shower we try to give a gift they may need.

I agree it stresses people out having to think about what to get ect.  I feel like showing up is more than enough!
