Nipple shields??

Question

I been using mine for a couple weeks now and trying to get off of it but baby won’t take my nipple without it..any tips for trying to get them off?? Or even how long is to long??

I would start the feed with the nipple shield and take it off midway through. It took a little while did my LO to get use to it. Once she got the hang of that I tried starting without the shield, but I would gently pinch the edge of my areola that lines up with the corner of her mouth and lift it up to make it easier for her to latch on. I would hold it up for her for about 5-10 seconds until I knew she had successfully pulled my nipple into the back of her mouth. Sometimes it would take a few tries or during the feed I'd have to take her off to reattach. Sometimes it wasn't working so I would go back to the shield for that feed.

I had a lactation consultant suggest a nipple inverter it pulls it out so they can latch better.  With the shield there is something to grab ahold of. With my first I had to use the shield and was told take

it off the last 5 mins, then work it earlier and earlier. It finally clicked for him one day. With my second I have not had issues I can take it off and he doesn't care, my son sucks so hard to start off that if I don't out it on I am sore by the end of the day.

Just keep offering it without, they'll get it eventually. I had to use mine for about three months before my son could nurse without it.

I’m to the point where my baby does the shield sometimes and without the other times. I like it mainly because I can see her getting the milk and if I’m concerned if any is coming out and also takes a load off my poor sore nipples.

Just keep trying without it. We would sometimes start with it and then I'd try to sneak it out. It's easier to try if baby isn't so hungry they are crying. I'd try to catch early cues or feed him a bit before trying without the shield. We used for one for the first 3 weeks and only had a few successes here and there and then it just clicked for him one day and we haven't used it since.
