Why does rape of sex actions happen between sibilings?

It’s so scary and crazy to think theres real life situationswhere this happens all the time and sometimes as a parent or adult you never notice? Why do sibilings have to rape their own brother and sister? It’s such a scary thought. I currently have a daughter of 1yr 6MO and pregnant with our second 36Weeks having a boy. Its scary to think this. How can we avoid this stuff? How can we talk to our kids if sometimes they don’t want to speak up?

My ex husband and I have been clear with our daughter repeatedly about how no one is allowed to touch or see her privates and they aren’t allowed to show her theirs. The only exception being some health concern she has and taking her to the doctor. 
Also, if anyone (even me or her dad or stepparents) make her uncomfortable, she needs to tell someone she trusts. She doesn’t have to give hugs if she doesn’t want to because it’s her body and choice, no matter who is asking. Also, I tell her we don’t keep secrets, we only do surprises. 
The reality is sexual abuse happens more often with someone you or the child knows, so stranger danger is important but I think kids knowing they have a voice even with people they normally feel safe around, is more relevant.

That escalated quickly... but yeah I guess its something to think about. I dont know if I love thinking of it in the context of siblings but just as far as general life goes it’s important to establish the conversation early about privates, no touching, and making sure your children always feel comfortable telling you if someone in their lives makes them feel uncomfortable. I worry more about people outside my home but I suppose the same conversation goes both ways. Though in practice I wouldn’t single out a sibling to another one unless I had real reason to believe there were issues. Good question though and great that you’re thinking ahead. Really my best advice is to cultivate a relationship of respect and trust with your kids so they feel they can come to you.

I have personal experience with this, and everyone should know that it's a thousand times more common than most people realize. Usually it isn't "rape" per sae, as it doesn't always result in intercourse and it isn't always non-consensual in the way most people think. Frequently it happens as a result of trauma, such as divorce, death of a parent or sibling, etc. Sometimes siblings turn to each other sexually for comfort, even if they are quite young. 
Yes it's disturbing, but EVERYONE should discuss inappropriate touching with their kids before the age of 10. If something traumatic happens in your child's life for the love of god, take them to counselling immediately. Therapists are trained to help your child cope with difficult feelings and situations, so please utilize their services.

I've seen with my own family things like this. in my personal opinion what is important is to realize that children start going through puberty and getting hormones around 10,11,12ish. But most parents don't explain things to the kids at this age. I think it would be extremely appropriate to explain about hormones and desires. And that it's okay to masturbate and have desires but it's not something that is done publicly or with family. And basically slowly and respectfully give them everything they need to know. I think that this happens at times because kids don't know better because parents assume that they aren't old enough to understand. But please don't misunderstand I'm primarily talking about 10-13 year olds who don't understand sex and acting on desires. I'm not talking about a 16 year old who understands and is raping his 11 year old sister. my views on that are entirely different.
