What is HPV and is it only contracted sexually? When looking it up, I became very confused! I understand there are many strains? And apparently there is a shot but only if you are age 26 and below? Any info I greatly appreciated!

I have HPV and almost 90% of people have this. It can cause abnormal cells or it can do nothing to you at all I found out I had it when I was pregnant and have to have a pap every 6 months to test for abnormal cells just got tested recently and all tests came back normal. It has done nothing to me and can be completely harmless in some cases and in others it can form into cancerous cells and could cause serious issues.

Human papillomavirus is an infectious disease that, while transmitted mainly through sexual contact, can also be transmitted through skin-to-skin contact. The FDA recommends the vaccine (three doses injected over a period of time) for children and young people up to age 26 in the hopes of inoculating them BEFORE they are exposed to the virus. They presume that after that age, individuals have already been exposed to some strain of the virus, and thus have built up their own antibodies for the infection. That said, many sexually active people have been infected with a form of the virus and haven't even realized it because most of the time, the infection shows no symptoms (genital warts) and goes away on its own after a few years. However, there are strains that, if left untreated, can cause cervical cancer. I believe it's about 95% of cases of cervical cancer are caused by HPV. The good news is that if you're over 26, you still can get the vaccine if you really want it, though it may be unnecessary. The bad news is that it is dispensed at your doctor's discretion, and your insurance likely will not cover it. :-/ Hope this helps.

It is a virus that comes in many strains, generally contracted through contact with someone who is infected .  Some strains are related to sex/genitals but others cause the sort of warts people get on their hands and feet.
